Maintenance Painting Instructions
The condition of wooden exterior cladding should be inspected annually. If you notice any damage, determine the cause. Structural deficiencies in the facade should be repaired as soon as possible. If the paint surface is intact but dirty or moldy, clean it using, for example, a BIOKLEEN algae and mold wash solution. Repair any paint damage using the same paint that was used for the original topcoat.
Under normal conditions, maintenance repainting for properly installed and factory-painted exterior cladding products is required approximately every 10–20 years.
Painting Conditions
The surface to be painted must be dry. The moisture content of the wood must not exceed 20% of the dry weight of the wood. During painting and drying, the temperature of the air, surface, and paint must be above +5°C (41°F), and the relative humidity must be below 80%. Avoid painting in direct sunlight.
Maintenance Repainting Instructions (Damage Level 3)
- Brush exterior cladding surfaces clean of dust and dirt.
- Remove any resin (pitch) using a steel scraper.
- Wash dirty or moldy surfaces with a mold removal solution.
- Remove loose paint with a scraper and brush away sanding dust.
- Remove any deteriorated wood material.
- Prime bare wood surfaces with WOODEX wood preservative.
- Protect rusting metal parts with Ferrex anti-corrosion primer.
- Prime areas treated with wood preservative using Nordica primer paint.
- Apply 1–2 coats of the original topcoat paint to the facade.
- Continue annual inspections of the wooden exterior cladding and follow maintenance guidelines.
According to standards SFS-EN ISO 4628 and SFS-EN ISO 2409, the condition of a paint surface is divided into six damage levels from 0 to 5.
- When the damage level is 0–1, washing and repainting with a topcoat is sufficient.
- Normal maintenance repainting is carried out when the damage level is 3. The surface is washed, loose paint is removed, damaged areas are primed, and the surface is repainted.
- When the damage level is 4–5, all paint is removed and the surface is completely repainted.
